What are my favorite ways to connect with my Higher Self? (I define what the Higher Self is to me here.)
Before we dive in, let me say that meditation — that is, quieting your mind and connecting to your center — is the best place to start if you want to hear the messages that your Higher Self is trying to convey to you. That’s the foundation.
But it doesn’t have to be sitting meditation if that doesn’t come easily to you. I’m a big believer that the things and the experiences that we find pleasurable are for a reason. That is God/Spirit/Source/the Universe, urging us “Hey, you find this fun — do more of it!”
So with the caveat that meditation is the common thread throughout all these methods, let’s get into it! Read on or watch my Youtube video on the topic below!
One way that I connect with my Higher Self is through dreams.
Who knows if the dream world is actual reality, and what we think of as our waking conscious world is actually the dream world?
The way that I like to unlock the power of my dreams is by writing down the symbols that came through: the people and the narratives that emerged…What was I doing? Why was it so important that I got that cinnamon bun for that person that I haven’t seen in 20 years?
Dream journaling is imperative to help me parse out common themes that show up, especially when I was first starting out.
Dreams are just like a whole magical world that offers a lot of answers. They are a fun, playful way for me to connect with my Higher Self because She’s not giving me direct answers. It’s like She’s saying, “You thought we were gonna give it to you easy? Nah. You gotta work for it!”
Another way that I love connecting with my Higher Self is through self-pleasure/masturbation/choking the chicken/rubbing the clit/[insert euphemism of choice here].
I discovered this method of connection during my longest dry spell ever. During this period of celibacy, I had a lot of time to explore with myself. Pleasure became a portal to another dimension.
One caveat: when I do my self-pleasure for the purposes of spiritual exploration, I don’t watch porn. During those sessions, I don’t want to introduce any extraneous energies. Everything I call out needs to be from within me. (That’s not to say that I don’t use like a vibrator. I think that was what took it to the next level for me because my fingers get tired…)
I like to ask a question before my session and then come out (no pun intended) with the answer. On the way up, it feels like all the clouds in my mind clear up. In that post-nut clarity, everything becomes so clear — everything just…feels good. And like I said before, when it feels good, that’s a sign that you should pay attention.
The orgasm is just a powerful tool. And it lives within all of us and is trying to communicate to us information. I pay attention to what images, words, sounds, smells flow to me as I’m approaching climax. I feel that they hold so much power. And those are also messages that I feel like my Higher Self is trying to convey to me, in a way that feels so pleasurable.
There are people out there that say things like, “Masturbate to manifest!” but I don’t think it’s as simple as that. It’s not a transaction à la let me masturbate in order to buy a new car or buy a new house or meet my dream partner. I use it as a tool to visualize what my life on the most optimal timeline looks like.
It’s a practice, so I don’t expect to receive all the answers in one session. When I get that spurt of inspiration, which other people might call it horniness, I think, “Ok, my Higher Self wants to talk to me.” I can track it pretty spot on with my menstrual cycle when I’m most fertile; physically, physiologically, biologically, of course, but also on a creative level. And those images come through to me more clearly, because I’m in that elevated state.
The next way that I like to connect with my Higher Self is through sacred plant intelligence, specifically cannabis and psilocybin (I go more into depth about my relationship with both plants here).
Intention is everything. I have to go into both of these experiences asking myself questions like: What do I want to learn about myself this time? What’s this pattern that I can’t seem to break? Why am I this way?
I like to be really specific and not just be open. I think I’m a little bit scared to tell the plants, “I’m open to whatever you want to show me!” Because I’m afraid that they’ll show me something like hell or eternal suffering and I am NOT ready for that. So yes, intention is so important to direct the trip.
To be clear, I don’t think my Higher Self exists in these plants; it’s just that such experiences take me to a place where my Higher Self is more available, and I’m able to receive Her messages more clearly.
And the two different experiences are very different from each other. Mushrooms feel more earthy. They feel like primordial knowledge, like knowledge that has existed since the beginning of time, ancient knowledge. And I learn through feeling. Cannabis transports me to hyperspace, a higher dimension where all the answers lie. It’s like I’m transported to this huge library in outer space. It’s a more dissociative experience in that I’m able to look at my life more objectively. It’s more meta.
Both experiences are best for me at different times in my life.
Tarot is another way that I love to connect with my Higher Self.
Tarot is a collection of archetypes, which are housed in the collective unconscious. So everybody has knowledge of all these archetypes, whether we’re conscious of it or not, because we contain all of them.
Tarot cards bring these archetypes down from the ether and into the material world. Even the simple act of shuffling and observing what cards fall out or what cards I’m drawn to pick out is magical because I know my Higher Self is talking to me through this process.
Another way that I love connect with my Higher Self is through automatic writing — or free writing, channeled writing, whatever you want to call it. Basically, it’s just releasing control and letting the pen form words. I like to believe that that’s my Higher Self speaking to me.
Other times I’ve channeled other beings, like my grandmas who have passed. It’s less of a conscious, “I’m going to sit down and channel my grandma today” and more like a calling or a beckoning. I feel this foreign energy in me that needs to come out. And the easiest way for me to do that is through channeled writing.
I was inspired by The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, who talks about doing morning pages, which is freewriting first thing in the morning until you fill three pages. It’s a way to dump all your creativity out and get your creative juices flowing, which is great for clearing the channel so that messages can come through.
The final way I love connecting with my Higher Self is through music.
The riff from “Let It Happen” by Tame Impala was playing during an activation that sparked my spiritual awakening. It was as if I remembered something that my Higher Self wanted me to remember or know at that moment.
I believe that the artists that I connect with and love so much are part of my soul family, and are channeling from a dimension in which we all existed. This is why we’re drawn to certain artists and why we’re not drawn to other artists. It feels like ecstasy and bliss when I listen to certain songs and sounds.
I’m a word person, so I love different ways that artists use wordplay to convey different messages. I also love sounds and how arrangement, the keys, chord progressions affect the way we receive that particular piece of music into our subconscious.
